Let the music play

From what I have read on various runners websites and forums there are defiantly two camps – those that love running with music and think it helps them train better and those that definitely don’t need the whole music thing. I definitely fall into the former camp and have found the right tunes with the right BPM really help to keep me going.
Funnily enough after deciding on this morning’s four mile training run that music was going to be the subject of today’s post I stumbled upon the Blog of James Beaumont who has just broken the round the world cycling record. In his post he talked about the music that kept him going on his epic journey. Part of his choices relate to his cycling cadence whilst other tracks related to his friends and family back home. While I can’t claim to be missing my home and family on an hour jaunt around the village they do have a fair bit of influence on my current MP3 training tracks.
So…
…thank you Tom for all the AWSOME, WICKED and LEGEND Prodigy and Pendulum tracks
...thank you Reya for the more laid back Scouting for Girls and Newton Faulkner
…and finally than you Geoff and Gil for keeping me on the straight and narrow (well almost!)

How far you bin?

On the home straight: taken on my mobile today after nearly 9 miles!
...so asked the old Norfolk boy shuffling along with his dog on today's run.
Well actually "I bin 9 miles" which is the furthest I've ever run in my whole life! As part of the training programme I'm following for the half-marathon I have to build in one long run every week - starting with four miles in week one and gradually building up to 12 miles by week 10. So far these long runs have been hit and miss. Five and six miles were OK whereas seven and eight we bloody hard work. But I have to report that today's nine epic wasn't actually too bad. In fact I quite enjoyed it! I'm not a fast runner (although according to my son I don't actually run or jog I lumber!) so the whole session took and hour an 45 minutes. But as I had set off just before 9 o'clock this morning after dropping my daughter off at school, I was back well in time for elevenses and have spent the whole day feeling very good and self righteous ( and have been in a very good mood according to my husband).
And in answer to the next old codger who I met on my run " Are you winning?"
Yes at the moment I most certainly am!

50? But I only feel 15!

I'm running the Norwich Half Marathon - yes really!
Why?
Well in 49 days I'll be 50.
Surely not I hear you all cry. You don't look a day over 40! Well I'm my father's daughter - Rog "Peter Pan" Harris who at the ripe old age of 73 (sorry Dad) doesn't look a day over 60 and is still going strong as the official photographer at Norwich City.
But I digress.
As I said in 49 days I'll be 50. I really have no idea how that happened but there it is. With the big day looming I began to think of ways to mark the occasion. A wild party perhaps? Or a once in a life time appearance as my near namesake Debbie Harry? But the more I thought about it the more I thought it would be good to have a challenge - something to really work towards. So for the past 5 weeks I have been plodding the roads in training for the Norwich Half Marathon.
I've been running on and off for the past 5 years - starting with the Race for Life in 2004 then moving up to the Cancer Research 10k in 2006 and 2007 - so a half marathon is really the next logical step. The other big reason for running is to raise money for East Anglia's Children's Hospices the race's official charity. As a family and members of CC Breckland Cycling Club we have been involved with EACH for the last 10 year's regularly taking part in the Annual Ride for Life. EACH is an extremely worthwhile organisation which supports families throughout their experience of caring for children with life-threatening conditions and complex healthcare needs.
So , there it is! I'm nearly half way through my training plan and so far I have managed to stick to the schedule. At the weekend I managed to run 8 miles - a first for me - and am mostly enjoying the running. I have set up this Blog to help me raise money and keep those of you who might be interested up to date with my training. It would be great if you could sponsor me too - just click the link on the top right of the page to go to my Just Giving page.
